KAMBO

WHAT IS KAMBO?

Kambo is a name for the waxy secretion created by the amazonian giant tree monkey frog (phyllomedusa bicolor). The secretion is currently utilized by 13 amazonian tribes and is known as the ‘vacina de floresta’ the forest vaccine. Kambo administered during ceremony is 100% ethically harvested by the Matsés tribe. The frog is not harmed in the extraction process. A portion of the proceeds from each ceremony are donated back to the tribe.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS?

Kambo is one of the strongest natural anti-inflammatory, antibiotic, antimicrobial and anesthetic substances found in the world. It provides the opportunity to wake up the body to its full natural potential. This secretion has been the subject of four decades of medical research. Kambo contains nine bio-active peptides that have potent effects on the gastrointestinal muscles, gastric and pancreatic secretions, blood circulation, and on the stimulation of the adrenal cortex and pituitary gland. These bio-active peptides offer a wide range of potential medicinal uses to aid in deep healing and cleansing for various ailments including:

  • Chronic pain & fatigue
  • Cancer
  • Hepatitis
  • Arthritis
  • Diabetes
  • STDs
  • Blood and vascular problems
  • Fertility complications
  • Migraines
  • Skin and eye issues
  • PTSD, depression, anxiety
  • Addictions

The tribes believe that Kambo cleansing works not only on a physical level, but on a spiritual one. The use of Kambo amongst amazonian tribes revolves around lifting “Panema” -- an energetic sickness thought to bring upon bad luck, depression, laziness, difficulties and disease. When nothing is going right is the right moment to take Kambo, according to the tribes. It is also used as a remedy against snake bites, malaria, yellow fever and other epidemic diseases.

HOW IS KAMBO ADMINISTERED?

Kambo is administered by heating up a small stick which is then used to apply several burn points to the superficial layer of the skin, creating a tiny blister. After the small burn points are applied, the blister is gently rubbed off to expose the epidermis for administration.  After the points have been opened, the secretion is applied on top of the points. The number and position of the points vary from person to person according to individual needs and physical constitution. For the best results, it is advisable to receive 3 treatments within the duration of a 28 day lunar cycle. For chronic conditions, the use of Kambo may be suggested longer term.

Ceremony Preparation

Please be sure to schedule your consultation. During the consultation, we will get to know each other, walk through the preparation and ceremony process, and go through any contraindications.

WHAT TO WEAR

Loose, stretchy pants or shorts and a short sleeved, or sleeveless shirt. Your shirt can be more body-fitting, but should be comfortable. Avoid strong smelling products on your hair and skin. If you have long hair, tie your hair back in a way that is comfortable for you. No dangly or excessive jewelry.

WHAT TO BRING

  • 1 gallon of room temperature water
  • EpiPen and inhaler (if applicable)
  • Full change of clothes
  • Toothbrush and toothpaste
  • Shawl or a blanket for your shoulders
  • Notebook and pen (if you’d like to journal after)
  • If you wear contacts, you may wish to bring a container to store them in (particularly if you’d like to receive Sananga during your ceremony)

WHAT TO EXPECT DURING CEREMONY

Every ceremony is unique. We will review the ceremonial process thoroughly on our call and again the day of your ceremony. Each ceremony is co-created with the spirit of Kambo and customized to accommodate your needs. Once Kambo is applied, its effects are intense and fast. Although physical experiences of Kambo may vary, the following are often reported:

  • Heat flush traveling up to your face and ears
  • Temporary swelling around the mouth and/or eyes
  • Tingling, throbbing sensations, and/or shaking
  • Heart palpates quickly for about 10-15 seconds
  • Feeling the “heat” of Kambo drop into the abdomen
  • Cramping in hands
  • Purging (throw up, needing to use the bathroom, crying, shaking or trembling)

You will be completely guided and assisted in a safe, gentle, supported, confidential and protected space with the utmost care during the entire process. Ceremonies last anywhere between 1.5-2.5 hours, but the strong effects are usually over anywhere between 20-30 minutes.

I also offer an optional purifying and protective smoke bath, Sananga and Hapé to help deepen your process. Once the Kambo dots are removed, a natural tree sap is applied to the points to help empower their healing process. The burn marks will fade with time, but depending on your skin and how you heal, you may always have small visible scars.

Ceremony Aftercare

After ceremony, you may feel energized or you may want to rest. Many report “feeling lighter” or reset and renewed. Others share an overall sense of calmness, strength, and clarity. Please allow yourself enough time and space to integrate after ceremony. Integration is a vital component of healing. You are doing deep work and want to honor your process. It is important that you are mindful of what you reintroduce back into your body, mind, and life.

For at least a few days after, eat as clean as possible. Limit salt, sugar, and oil. Do not consume fried, over processed foods, garlic, peppers and spicy food, alcohol, and recreational drugs. Take time for body movement, meditation, journaling, and bonding with nature. Most importantly, be gentle and take care of yourself.
